Healthy skin is thick and plump, with an abundance of fibres of elastin and collagen (proteins) in the deeper (dermal) layers of the skin.

Generally, the only way to induce new collagen to be formed, a process known as collagen neogenesis, is to cause stress in the dermal layers. This can be achieved to some extent by way of direct mechanical disruption -- for instance, needling of the dermal layers when injecting fillers.
