SkinPen® microneedling is a non-surgical procedure that uses a medical microneedling device to create controlled micro-channels in the skin.

For suitable individuals, it may be used to help improve the visible appearance of texture and certain types of superficial scarring when performed by appropriately trained practitioners.

SkinPen® Needling

What it may help with

For appropriate candidates, SkinPen® microneedling may be used with the intention of improving the appearance of:

  • Mild, superficial acne or surgical scarring

  • Uneven or coarse surface texture

  • Enlarged-looking pores

Any change in appearance, and how noticeable it is, differs from person to person and cannot be promised.

How it works

During the procedure, a trained practitioner moves the SkinPen® device across the skin to create fine, controlled micro-channels using sterile needles. This controlled injury is intended to:

  • Trigger a localised wound-healing response

  • Support gradual remodelling of texture and collagen over time

Treatment depth, pattern and settings are selected based on your:

  • Skin type and tone

  • Treatment area

  • Medical history and previous procedures

A series of sessions is often recommended. The number and spacing of treatments are determined by your practitioner and reviewed as your skin responds.

Safety, risks & aftercare

All microneedling procedures carry risks.

Before treatment, your practitioner will:

  • Review your medical history, medications and previous treatments

  • Examine the area to be treated

  • Explain potential benefits, limitations and alternatives (including not treating)

  • Discuss possible side effects, including less common but more serious complications

  • Provide written aftercare instructions specific to your plan

  • For suitable individuals, SkinPen® microneedling may help improve the appearance of surface texture, mild acne or surgical scars and visible enlarged pores. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Comfort levels differ between people. Many describe a vibrating or scratching sensation during treatment. Topical numbing cream and/or cooling measures may be used, where appropriate, to help reduce discomfort.

  • Downtime varies with skin type and treatment intensity. Many people experience noticeable redness and tightness for a day or more, with some residual sensitivity or dryness for several days. Your practitioner will advise what to expect for your specific plan.

  • Some people notice that their skin looks temporarily more radiant in the days after treatment, with gradual changes in texture and the appearance of scars over the following weeks to months. The timing and extent of any visible change are individual and cannot be promised.

  • The number of sessions depends on your skin, concerns and how you respond. Many plans involve a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, followed by review. Your practitioner will discuss an individual course, but specific outcomes or an exact number of treatments cannot be guaranteed.

  • Microneedling can be considered in a range of skin types, including some deeper skin tones, but not all settings or protocols are appropriate for every person. The risk of pigment change can be higher in darker skin, so suitability, depth and aftercare are assessed and adjusted individually.

  • Common effects include temporary redness, swelling, tightness and mild discomfort. Less common risks include infection, prolonged redness, persistent pigment change or scarring. Your practitioner will explain these and any precautions relevant to your medical history and skin type before you decide whether to proceed.

  • You will be advised to keep the skin clean, avoid makeup and heat for a period, use gentle skincare, and apply SPF 50+ during the day. Your practitioner will give you specific written instructions and advise when you can safely resume regular products and activities.

  • In some cases, SkinPen® microneedling may be combined with other treatments, such as LED, as part of a broader plan. Any combination is assessed on a case-by-case basis, and timing is planned to support safety and recovery.

  • Microneedling is generally not recommended over areas of active infection, open wounds, uncontrolled acne, certain skin diseases, keloid-prone scars, or in some medical conditions. Pregnancy, medications and other factors may also affect suitability. Your practitioner will assess whether this treatment is appropriate for you and may recommend no treatment or referral to another health professional where indicated.
